The phakic IOL market is expected to grow slightly throughout the forecast period. Demand for phakic IOLs will be driven by the aging population and the associated need for refractive correction among this demographic. Limiting this market is the high cost of phakic IOL surgery compared to alternative refractive procedures such as LASIK. In most European countries, refractive surgeries are considered elective procedures. The phakic IOL market is therefore sensitive to economic fluctuations.
While the number of sales is increasing at a moderate rate, the prices are falling at a slightly lower rate, creating a relatively flat market. Furthermore the market will be limited by the small number of ophthalmologists who perform these procedures.

Ocular conditions such as myopia and hyperopia are more prevalent among the elderly. In addition, surgical procedures to correct these refractive aberrations are appropriate for older individuals whose vision has stabilized. The increasing number of patients who are candidates for refractive procedures will drive demand for the phakic IOL market.,Refractive errors can be corrected by procedures such as Phakic IOL implantation and Laser Assisted In-Situ Keratomileusis (LASIK). LASIK modifies corneal thickness; thus it is limited by the amount of corneal tissue that can be safely removed. If too much is removed, the cornea becomes too thin and weak, and bulging of the cornea could occur, which is a condition known as ectasia. Treatment of ectasia involves exchanging the cornea in a procedure called keratoplasty, which leaves the patient with very poor vision. Phakic IOL implantation has the advantage of being able to correct a higher degree of refractive error than LASIK. Even with these disadvantages, LASIK is the leading refractive surgery procedure because phakic IOL implantation is more expensive, and implantation of these lenses is a more invasive procedure.
