The U.S. market for plate and screw defined in this report as standard, locking, hybrid, and distal radius types. The standard, locking, and hybrid segments are further broken-down by materials, with each material finally broken-down by size. The cannulated screws and hip related plate and screw are not included, but discussed separately. The largest segment in the total plate and screw market was locking type. The relatively large size of this segment is due to the biomechanical advantages of the locking system over the standard system, which, among other things, provides better blood supply to the underlying bone (the plate is locked to the screws rather than the bone, as in the standard system) and does not require precise plate contouring. Despite all these advantages, the use of the standard system is expected to persist in the future due to significant cost advantages over locking and hybrid systems, as well as a material number of fracture cases, such as forearm diaphyseal fractures, not requiring the use of locking technology to be treated effectively. Moreover, in some cases of fractures requiring compression, the use of standard system is mandatory, as locking plates do not compress against the bone.

The use of titanium over stainless steel offers two main advantages: higher biocompatibility and decreased weight. These factors are responsible for rapid growth in the use of titanium for plates and screws, primarily in small and mini fragment plates. However, use of titanium in large fragment plates and screws has not been as rapid because of the higher weight-bearing benefits of steel. The increased pricing of titanium over stainless steel devices will continue to aid market growth as more surgeons transition to using these products.,Plating devices were pioneered by the Association for the Study of Internal Fixation (AO/ASIF) in Switzerland. Early sales and marketing was done by the Straumann Group, of which the company’s osteosynthesis division eventually became Synthes, which was acquired by Johnson & Johnson’s Depuy in 2012 to become DePuy Synthes.
