The market for non-contact tonometers is expected to remain fairly constant in value over the forecast period, with modest growth in unit sales being offset by price erosion. France and several other countries are highly saturated with non-contact tonometers; ophthalmologists in that country historically display a strong preference for non-contact devices. However, contact tonometers, particularly of the portable electronic variety, are beginning to replace the use of non-contact tonometers in several regions. A limiting factor for non-contact tonometers is their high price when compared to their contact counterparts.
The long life expectancy of Europeans and the aging population will increase demand for diagnostic tools for age-related diseases. The prevalence of glaucoma increases as the population ages. As a result, the need for glaucoma diagnostic tools will rise over the forecast period. To keep up with patient demand, eye care professionals will look to expand their practices by including these devices in their offices. In addition, the eye care profession itself will likely expand and the tonometer market will be driven by new sales.,A tonometer is a device that is used for measuring the intraocular pressure of an eye. Elevated intraocular pressure is associated with glaucoma, a disease that is characterized by the degeneration of the optic nerve. Tonometers are segmented into contact or non-contact types. The market for contact tonometers consists of both Goldmann tonometers and portable electronic, or hand held, tonometers. Portable electronic tonometers have been on the market for approximately 25 years. However, these devices have recently had success in new areas. In particular, optometrists have been adopting handheld devices in recent years. Goldmann and handheld contact tonometers are not direct competitors. Most ophthalmologists have a Goldmann but many are also interesting in having a handheld device on hand as a secondary tonometer.
