Conventional hip screws, also known as conventional hip screws, are used for the fixation of pertrochanteric, intertrochanteric and subtrochanteric fractures of the femur. They have been used for over 40 years. A complete system includes the screw barrel that penetrates the femur and the plate that it connects to, which stabilizes the fracture. The advantage of using conventional hip screws is the simplicity of the procedure, owing to the number of side plate options that can be used in a given surgery. Conventional hip screws allow for earlier patient mobilization and rehabilitation over other forms of fracture fixation. However, the incision made for conventional hip screws tends to be larger than that made for competing intramedullary hip screw technology. Conventional hip screws produce optimal results when used with stable intertrochanteric fractures. Intramedullary devices tend to perform better in unstable fractures.
