Plates are used in arthrodesis, which is the surgical or artificially-induced method of ossifying two or more fragments of bone together. There are various sizes and shapes for plate devices, as they are manufactured to adapt to different anatomies. Once fracture healing is complete, a follow-up surgery may be required to remove the device from the patient’s body. Some countries have very high plate removal rates, yet in other countries such as the U.K., plates are only removed when a patient complains of irritation or pain.
Plate sizes are classified into large, small and mini fragments. The various components of plates and screws are constructed from stainless steel alloys or titanium, with the latter being used more often in small and mini fragments due to its greater biocompatibility and lesser degree of load bearing with the involved anatomy. The use of titanium has been rapidly increasing in small and mini fragments as surgeons become accustomed to the benefits of titanium in smaller anatomies.
